Icheon in South Korea is known the world over, and has been for some time, for its amazing ceramics. The city’s tradition of ceramic working dates back some 5,000 years and is still going strong today. The ceramicists dedicate years to training and perfecting the craft, and when they reach the status of “Master,” it seems they can create anything, with the clay flying through their fingers to become graceful bowls, pitchers, jugs and teapots.
The video below shows a few varieties of ceramic crafting, from the initial throwing on a wheel to the intricate decoration processes. It’s definitely worth a look.
The creation process is a joy to watch, just like a lot of crafting videos, and completely satisfying to see the finished product emerge from seemingly nothing. Today, Icheon is a center of ceramic manufacturing in South Korea, along with Yeoju, and it’s also a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art.
