The bond between a man and his dog is something that transcends time. Our ancestors prowling the caves of Europe knew it, as did the settlers on the Prairie. Like the birth of a child, there’s no way to comprehend just how strong a feeling the bond creates until it happens.
That’s why this story should be no surprise. When 85-year-old Texas rancher JR Nicholson of Mason County called for an ambulance during an emergency, there was nothing that would keep his dog Buddy away.
When the ailing rancher asked EMTs to find his dog, they could not find him. The ambulance needed to leave and hurried JR in for an hour-long drive to the nearest hospital. After 20 miles, the ambulance was waved down by a passing driver. A certain someone jumped on the small outside step, and ridden with the group. Buddy wanted to be with his owner despite the extreme danger of his ride…on the outside of the ambulance!

“Two things go through your mind in a split second,” the ambulance driver said. “First, what could have happened to (Buddy), and second, you realize he is quite an animal.”
“It was kind of funny. We were inside and he had jumped onto the control switch and turned on the sirens and the lights,” the other EMT said as they were inside the emergency room. “We didn’t know what was going on.”
After seeing Buddy’s dedication to his owner and friend, I can’t help but tear up. This makes me hug my own dog that much harder.
You’re awesome, Buddy! JR is quite a lucky man.
