This Surreal Dance Performance Blends The Digital And Human Worlds

If you think you know dance, you should probably see Pixel. It was created by French performance artists Adrien Mondot and Claire Bardainne, who operate together as the Adrien M/Clair B Company. It looks like a combination of a modern dance performance and animation, as human figures interact with swirling points of light and navigate optical illusion landscapes formed out of grids and lines.

The dancers on stage interact with the projected images, creating the illusion that they are actually moving through the light like water.

The full performance clocks in at an hour in length, and features 11 dancers, whose movements were designed by hip-hop choreographer Cie Kafig. It also features a dizzying amount of digital projection mapping techniques that all come together to create the spectacular piece. Combining modern digital technology with something as innately human and primal as dance creates a strange space on stage that recalls both the far reaches of space and the interior of the human psyche. It’s truly something worth seeing.
