A recent study shows that men who sit more than six hours a day have a 20% higher death rate than men who sit for only three hours a day. The rate is even higher for women, with a 40% higher death rate for the same lengths of time. Because of these health risks, standing desks are becoming more and more popular.
Although building a desk from scratch is definitely a difficult task, this man’s DIY project looks like a typical piece of furniture at first glance. Once you see that it actually transforms from a normal, seated desk to a standing desk with a quick pull and a motor, you’ll wish you had one for yourself…or the engineering know-how to build one. Check out the amazing desk below.
The original plans show how the desk works once it’s built.
He started by making the brackets out of steel.
He then drilled holes in the brackets.
Then he marked the poplar wood for cutting.
He cut out all of the pieces for the desk.
Here it is all put together, in the seated position.
Now it’s ready for the standing mechanism to be installed.
These pieces will push the desk upward for the standing position.
The motor helps push the top of the desk up.
Here it is in the standing position.
Check it out in action.
All that’s left is a few coats of stain.
The finished product looks great.

This man made every part of the desk himself, down to welding the brackets! It’s amazing what you can make when you set your mind to something. I’m totally jealous of his desk and his skills.
