Biologist David Galante is familiar with how lobsters normally appear. On his recent dive outing around Anacapa Island off the coast of California, he happened upon something completely unexpected: this colossal crustacean.
Average lobsters tend to only weigh around 3 pounds, but this fella came in at a whopping 12 pounds. Though he’s not the biggest in history, he’s at an impressive four times the regular weight.
He admits he was tempted to boil the big guy for dinner, but refrained since he would clearly make a great breeder.

This size was much more common several decades ago, so they think he must be at least 70 years old.

Galante even named him Albert Girther, and introduced him to his dog. They got along pretty well.

They brought Albert to the Ty Warner Sea Centre, where he enjoyed a nice vacation gorging on yummy food.

They didn’t want to leave him in captivity, and soon released him back into a marine reserve where they prohibit fishing.

The nocturnal sea creature will continue to live his long, happy life.

I can hear the heartbreak of so many lobster lovers from here. However, I’m thankful this guy won’t be drenched in butter and served alongside cheddar biscuits any time soon.
