This Artist Takes the Pop-Up Book to the Next Level with Paper Sculptures.

When German graphic designer Peter Dahmen was in college, he was tasked with creating something three-dimensional out of paper. While constructing the project was no problem for him, he realized that a paper sculpture, being by nature quite delicate, would most likely get damaged on his commute to class, which included taking a train. So, to avoid the damage, Dahmen decided to figure out a way to make his sculpture collapsible, folding down into a flat parcel, à la a pop-up book.

From there, Dahmen’s love of the pop-up paper sculpture took off. He became fascinated with the mechanism of the pop-up and created more and more, each project getting more intricate. Today, he works as a paper engineer (yes, that’s a thing), creating paper crafts, promotions and exhibits for all manner of clients.

Dahmen also recently collaborated with filmmaker Christopher Helkey for a short video in which he discusses his craft, how much he loves working with paper, and his encouraging message for artists.
