This Amazing Discovery In A Farmhouse Is Not What Anyone Expected

A Reddit user in rural Tennessee, known here by his username of Evilenglish, made a discovery that most of us only dream about. While cleaning his grandparents’ house (where, ironically, he spent many a childhood day having Treasure Island read to him), he uncovered a safe buried in the floor of a closet.

The challenge was to get it open. Evilenglish tried a few possible combinations, such as birthdays and social security numbers, but none worked. He eventually hunted down a locksmith who could help.

The closet. Not the first place you’d look if you were thinking “buried treasure.”

Inside the closet was similarly unassuming. The rug was dirty, and it was this dirty rug that actually set the events in motion.

Under the rug, though, was a strange, round cap.

Below the cap was the opening of a safe that was seemingly forgotten. The combination was lost to the ages, and so the next task became figuring out how to open it.

Tim, the locksmith, came to the rescue after many failed attempts at unlocking the safe. Though the closet was cramped, Tim worked diligently.

The lock was finally removed, and the safe could be opened.

The dramatic reveal.

What appeared to be a pile of bricks turned out to be boxes.

The safe was full of boxes and rolls of coins.

They began unloading the safe, pulling out more and more coins and bills.

Even more!

Despite its small opening, the safe held quite a bit.

Unfortunately, a lot of the money inside the safe suffered from water damage due to a pipe breaking in the house some years prior.

The moisture in the safe damaged the covers, but the coins inside were protected.

There were silver coins…

…as well as silver bars.

Under the money collection was a rusty tool chest full of watches and jewelry.

When Evilenglish shared his story on Reddit, fellow users offered helpful advice. Some even gave him a cursory appraisal of the find, which may be valued at over a thousand dollars.

As if that weren’t enough, Evilenglish and his brother later found another safe hidden inside a coffee table. Inside were a number of pistols and a collection of one dollar bills known as “Barr notes,” rare due to the fact that the Secretary of State, Joseph W. Barr, held the position for only 29 days.

The exploration of this find is still underway, and Evilenglish promises the Internet that he’ll share more photos of the items inside once they’re cleaned up. We’re certainly pretty excited! After all, this is the closest we’ve ever gotten to uncovering buried treasure.
