These Vintage Lamps Can Cost Hundreds Of Dollars, Here’s How To Make One For $15

In the 1960’s, string art lamps were all the rage in home decor. Now that the psychedelic works aren’t as popular, these vintage specialty items can go for hundreds of dollars Online. Instead of buying an old one, Redditor Daannii took matters into her own hands and made one for herself, spending only $15 on materials. Not only did she save a hunk of cash, but she also made a one of a kind item with her own two hands. Check out our abridged version of her tutorial below.

Here’s the finished product. She designed and put together the entire frame herself.

To make it she used cotton string, bead trim, 10 inch wood circles, two 12 inch embroidery hoops, wood glue, hot glue, and wood stain.

She started out by making a template for cutting her wood circles in half. She traced the circles on a piece of paper.

After she traced and cut out the paper circle, she folded them in half.

In the template, she cut out the dips that would hold the embroidery hoops and the string.

She sanded and stained the hoops and wood circle halves.

She drilled a hole in the wood and smoothed it out to create the wings for the string.

Using wood glue and string, she put the frame together.

She measured out the lengths of beading for the edges of the wood circle halves. The beads act as teeth to hold the string in place.

Using hot glue, she attached the beads.

Once the beads were glued on, it was time to start stringing.

Tying a piece of yarn around the structure for support, things started coming together.

Dani’s tutorial provides more details on how to achieve the string pattern.

She strung the thread over half of the structure, then started over from the top.

Here you can see the pattern start to emerge.

Once she finished the first half, she flipped the structure over to complete the second.

Once all of the sides and halves were finished, she tied off the ends.

The finished product is incredibly intricate.

The retro design of this lamp may be considered out of style to many, but making something amazing with your own two hands never goes out of style. What do you think of Dani’s design?
