Julia Bennett‘s mind wandered during her Biology 101 class. However, Bennett wasn’t thinking about an upcoming party or trying to stay awake. She wondered how she was going to turn what she and her classmates observed into art. In her series Into the Umbra, you can see which direction Bennett decided to go. After noticing the similarities between space and the ocean, Bennett opted to focus on magnified images of plankton that best highlighted this likeness and display them. The result is really cool and feels a lot more like a trip into space than one to a lab.

This is a pretty far out trip! It’s amazing what Julia can do as both a marine science and photography student.
