The Middle Ages were a particularly scary time to be alive. Everything was terrifying and no one truly knew why. You could die from the common cold and that would be one of the must enjoyable ways to go. It, at least, sure beat getting swollen lymph nodes in your armpit and groin like you would if you contracted the Bubonic plague, which might as well have been called the “common” plague back then. Everyone seemed to have it–it was like Pokemon cards you could die and likely would die from.
How easy it was to die back then might be hard for someone with access to even a fraction of modern medicine to comprehend, but you have to understand how primitive their understanding of science was back then. Imagine a stupid baby who had the authority to prescribe you blood-sucking leeches as a means to curing your ills.
