These creatures might not actually be aliens, but the Velella velella–or “by the wind surfers”– that have been washing up on California beaches are quite alarming. It’s not just how they look, but the sheer volume of them that might make you run for the hills. The jellyfish-like creatures are washing ashore by the thousands (even millions) and are covering many of the beaches that make up the West Coast of North America.

Apparently, these creatures have been beach-bound after a change in the winds and currents that typically take them out to sea.
Here’s a close up shot of the Velella, a small free floating hydrozoan. It’s currently the only known species in the genus.

While not much is really known about these jellyfish-like creatures, one thing is for sure: this would be a sight you’d never forget. There’s also good news for humans: their stingers cannot penetrate human skin. Not that I recommend jumping into a pile of these things if you do come across them.
Velella velella sightings have become more common in recent months, leading up to this mass “invasion.” If they take over the world, don’t say you weren’t warned. Because I just warned you.
