Sweden’s Chilliest Lodgings Get A Warm Reception For Their 25th Anniversary

Every year, more than 50,000 visitors bundle up to visit ICEHOTEL in the northern Swedish town of Jukkasjärvi. And it’s exactly what it sounds like—the entire hotel, which includes a set of unique rooms as well as a bar, church, and pillar hall—is entirely constructed from ice. Because of that, it takes on a different incarnation each year, and artists are called in to design and build one-of-a-kind rooms that will only last the winter, until melting back into the Torne River in mid-April.

This year is the hotel’s 25th anniversary, and the rooms are stunning. Everything, with the exception of the bedding, is made of ice. Depending on your tolerance for the cold, the hotel may be more or less cozy, but it’s stunning to behold.

The bar, also constructed from ice.

Here’s a time-lapse video of the construction of the ice bar:

So if you’re up to brave the cold, or even if you just don’t want to have to worry about refrigerating your food, you might want to check out ICEHOTEL. But don’t forget to pack extra socks.
