It’s Hard To Believe Anyone Would Abandon These Castles; They’re Masterpieces

Believe it or not, the castles you are about to see were totally abandoned. You might be thinking to yourself, how could anyone want to leave a castle? It makes a lot of sense if you consider what goes into residing in one. Sure, castle living seems great, but have you ever thought about how hard it would be to clean one of those things? It’s hard enough to keep a modest house presentable. Plus, if the property taxes don’t get you, the heating bill will.


Castello di Sammezzano – Tuscany, Italy


Built in 1605 and redesigned in the mid-to-late 1800s, this castle functioned as a hotel in the 1990s.


Now it’s totally abandoned.


Save for visitors who travel from all over to see its beautiful interior.


It truly is breathtaking.


Pidhirtsi Castle – Pidhirtsi, Ukraine

This castle was built in the mid-1600s and moonlighted as a Tuberculosis sanitarium after World War II. After a fire in 1956, the interior was ruined and deemed not worthy of being occupied.


Bannerman Castle – Bannerman Island, New York

In 1900, Francis Bannerman bought Bannerman Island and built a castle to help draw attention to his military supplies business. Not only is the castle abandoned, but the island is, too.


Kellie’s Castle – Perak, Malaysia

This castle was never finished after its owner died in 1926.


Château Miranda or Château de Noisy – Celles, Belgium

Built in 1866, this castle has been left abandoned since 1991.


Kasteel van Mesen – Lede, Belgium

Niek Beck

This castle was built in 1628 and was used over the years as a gin distillery, tobacco factory, and boarding school. The castle was abandoned when the school folded in 1971, and has since been demolished.

Despite the disrepair many of these castles are now in, they’re all just so beautiful. One can only imagine how much these places stood out when they were used.
