A team of divers in the Caribbean got a nasty surprise earlier this month. They were photographing a giant sperm whale when, all of the sudden, it released a nasty bowel movement right in their faces. Needless to say, it was really gross and the divers couldn’t get away fast enough.
Here is the whale in question (pre bowel movement). The divers were working on a government project to photograph whales off the cost of the island of Dominica. When they spotted the sperm whale, they approached it and began photographing.
But when the divers got too close, the startled animal unleashed what they called a “poonado.” While there’s a chance it could have been a digestive issue, the divers believe it was a rarely seen defense mechanism. (AHHHHHH.)
Keri Wilk, one of the divers, described the water as turning into chocolate milk. Worse yet, Wilk says he prefers to dive with just googles and a snorkle. He and the other divers ended up being coated in the whale’s…ahem poo.
Wilk and his fellow divers were unable to escape the poonado as the whale began spinning on its side, and flapping its tail. This fanned the matter towards the divers, which I can imagine was not a very pleasant experinece.
“I had poop in my eyes, mouth, wetsuit, everywhere and I was soaked in it from head to toe. But, after leaving the cloud, it quickly washed away, and didn’t leave a smell on us,” said Wilk. “I did take an extra long shower once I returned to shore later that day, just in case.”

Nature is such a wonderful, and beautiful thing. Sometimes though, it’s just really gross.
