This Strange Mayfly Emergence In Wisconsin Is Nightmarish. And Really, Really Big.

If you’re not familiar with mayflies, they are a typed of winged insect that has a relatively short lifespan. They look like a cross between a fly and a mosquito… and sometimes they find ways to terrify entire towns. Mayflies mate in such a way where all the mayflies in a population will mature at once. This “hatch” will occur for a day or two. Mayflies (and chaos, naturally) will be everywhere. One just happened in Wisconsin and it’s way more terrible then I could have ever imagined.

The hatch near La Crosse, Wisconsin, was SO big it appeared on the weather radar.

National Weather Service

Since the 20th, mayflies have been covering every available surface.

Going outside would NOT be recommended.

Technically mayflies aren’t dangerous…

But would you try to set foot in this kind of madness?

National Weather Service

According to the National Weather Service: “The radar detected the flies about 845 pm, emanating from the river (the source) with echo values similar to that of light-moderate rain (35-40 dBZ). With a general south-to-north wind flow above the surface, the mayflies quickly moved north once in the air. As the flies dispersed moving north-northeast, they also gained altitude with some of the echo being detected as far north as Black River Falls and as high as 2500 feet above ground.” Soon, the mayflies will die and the towns in Wisconsin will be returned to normal. The nightmares people have, however, will probably continue. Be thankful you aren’t in this town right now and share this strange phenomenon with others. Click on the button below.
