Soldiers have a tough job, that goes without saying. Theirs is a job that’s changed over the years, almost as much as its stayed the same. Which is exactly what British photographer Thom Atkinson explored for his series “Soldiers Inventories.”
These 13 pictures of British soldiers’ gear from the last 1000 years paint a heroic picture of the men and women who defend their country. I can’t believe just how much stuff soldiers had to carry. How was that even possible?
1.) Soldier’s gear from 1066 at the Battle of Hastings.
2.) The equipment of a mounted knight during the Siege of Jerusalem in 1244.
3.) Fighter archer at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.
4.) From 1485, the gear and armor from a Yorkist man at arms at the Battle of Bosworth.

7.) From 1709, a private sentinel’s gear from the Battle of Malplaquet.

9.) The gear of a private soldier in the Rifle Brigade at the Battle of Alma in 1854.
10.) 1916, the kit of a private soldier during WWI at the Battle of the Somme.
11.) A Lance Corporal’s gear from the Battle of Arnhem in 1944.
12.) Royal Marine during the Falklands War in 1982.
13.) A 2014 Royal Engineer in Helmland Province, Afghanistan.
