Snow Drawings is an ongoing art project from Sonja Hidrichsen. As you might imagine from the name, Hidrichsen uses wide open landscapes and frozen lakes with fresh snow to create amazing, intricate snow drawings.
Hidrichsen created her first piece of snow art back in 2009 all on her own during an artist residency in Colorado. Since then her snow drawings have gotten bigger, and more ambitious. She now enlists the help of volunteers to help create the drawings. You’ve seriously got to see them.
2009 – Snowmass Village, Colorado
This first piece grew out of Hidrichsen’s snow shoe walks during a three month residency in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
2.) 2011 – Ooms Pond near Chatham, New York.
Hinrichsen enlisted the help of local volunteers for this snow drawing.
3.) 2011 – Hayden, Colorado.
These snow drawings were created at Carpenter Ranch in Northern Colorado. Some were made on the frozen Yampa River. Hinrichsen says she got very lucky with the weather for this piece as the drawing took a few days to complete.
4.) 2012 – Rabbit Ears Pass, Colorado.
This drawing took Hinrichsen and her group of volunteers two weekends in complete in January and Febuary 2012.
5.) 2013 – Catamount Lake, Colorado.
Hinrichsen says that frozen bodies of water make some of the best canvasses for her snow drawings. It her and a volunteer army of 60 people three days to complete this drawing.
6.) 2014 – Former Yampa River, Colorado.
Hinrichsen and 50 volunteers teamed up to recreate the original flow of the Yampa River on the lake that was created when the river was dammed up.
