Traveling is a great way to enrich your life and broaden your worldview. But where in the world should you travel to to get your fix of the weird and the creepy? Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 creepiest travel destinations in the world. Most people probably think vacations shouldn’t be “creepy” or “terrifying,” but this list might change your mind. I want to see them all.

If you’re planning a trip to Portugal, then stopping off at the Royal Church of St. Francis is a must. The church is located in the quiet, scenic town of Evora, but just wait until you step inside. The bones of the dead await.

During the 16th century the church was running out of space to bury people, so the monks came up with an idea. They dug up, and piled the remains of almost 5,000 people into a consecrated chapel in the church. They call it the Chapel of Bones.

From the floor to ceiling the chapel is decorated with bones. And if that’s not spooky enough for you, the rotted corpses of two people (a man and a child) dangle from nooses inside the chapel. Talk about creepy.

For you next trip to Mexico, you absolutely need to check out this museum. It contains the preserved remains of 111 mummies, all of which were unearthed between 1865 and 1989. The strangest thing about these mummies though, is that they look like they were in an extreme amount of pain when they died. Many of them have expressions that look like they’re shouting “No!”

Just outside of Prague is a very morbid, 15th century Gothic church. What makes this church morbid is the chapel in the basement. In the 19th century, a wood carver by the name of Frantisek Rint, decorated the chapel using the remains of 40,000 skeletons from the church’s tombs.

In 1944, 60 Japanese battleships and 275 fighter planes were sunk in this stretch of ocean by a daring American raid. If you’re into scuba diving, this is the creepy destination of a lifetime. Divers to the area report that there are still remains of some of the 3,000 sailors who went down with their ships. They also say that some of their ghosts still haunt the wreckage.

Get a good scare on your next west coast vacation. The Winchester House, built by Sarah Winchester the heiress to the Winchester rifle empire, took 32 years to complete, and it is literally a labyrinth. It has 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 fire places, and 47 stairwells. Oh, and it’s also very haunted by the ghosts of those people killed by guns the Winchester family built.

You can even stay overnight at the house if you want to scare yourself silly. Previous guests report hearing organ music, ghostly figures, flickering lights, and turning doorknobs. Sounds like fun.

Visiting Japan anytime soon? Then pay a visit to Aokigahara Forest for some creepy forest fun. Aokigahara Forest is located at the base of Mount Fuji, and is notorious as a place where people go to commit suicide. Over the last 50 years thousands of people have disappeared into the forest, presumably to take their own lives.

It also has a dark past. Supposedly Aokigahara Forest was where the ritual of ubasute began. Ubasute was the practice of leaving old people to die in the wilderness. It’s said that the forest is haunted by their angry spirits.

Right after you’re done visiting creepy forests in Japan, you can head down to the Philippines for some more morbid fun. For centuries, the people of the northern Philippines mummified their dead though an elaborate process, and buried their bodies in underground caves.

During the late 20th century these caves were discovered. It wasn’t long before an enterprising sideshow operator allegedly stole the mummy of a ancient tribal chieftain for his show. Now locals believe the entire area is cursed because of this theft.

When you’re done getting creeped out in Asia, how about you head on over to Africa? Every year around Halloween, bats fill the skies over central Zambia. These bats are giant fruit bats migrating on their way from Congo, approximately 8 million of them.

When we say giant bats, we mean giant. These fruit bats can have wingspans up to 6 feet long. I would not want to mess with any of these animals.

After all those bats, you probably want something a little more low key. How about a visit to Tunguska, Russia? In 1908, a large object crashed into the remote, Siberian wilderness.

Officially, scientists said that it was an meteor. However, some speculate that it might have been a U.F.O. The area is still as isolated now as it was 100 years ago. If you can make it all the way out to the impact site, who knows what might be watching you from the tree line.

For the final stop on your creepy journey, how about Peru? Specifically Lima’s amazing, shaman market. Here you can find everything you need to cast any spell you’d ever want. For example, you might find llama fetuses, monkey skulls, dirt from the high Andes, and live snakes. Sounds like a good place cap off a world wide creepy trip.
