This Cheap And Easy Cat Shelter Can Help Save Homeless Kitties Lives This Winter

Winter is rough on strays. Cats are often found seeking shelter in garages, gutters, and inside car hoods or on top of tires. The latter can become dangerous for them when we find ourselves rushing to make it to work in the morning and they go unnoticed…Until it’s too late.

This Reddit user was inspired by a couple of homeless cats found wandering around her neighborhood looking for a place to stay warm as the temperature starts dropping. Instead of forcing them to fend for themselves, they decided to build this inexpensive and easy to assemble shelter. They even uploaded the steps for anyone who wants to help out their own neighborhood felines.

Start by cutting a cat-sized hole in the front of the tub.

Add a layer of straw at the base.

Measure and cut insulation.

And add that on top of the straw.

Line the sides with more insulation.

Tape the walls together and add more straw around that, creating a cozy box.

Then the front, making sure to include the hole, and back.

Line the hole with duct tape to keep from scratching the cats.

Make sure to also line the insulation hole, and add more straw to the bottom for comfort.

Top with more insulation.

Add the lid, and voila!

A perfect cat habitat.

The comments suggest also providing a second entry/exit in case other, more aggressive animals attempt to box the helpless cats inside. The user also explained how they always attempt to bring the strays in for spaying or neutering in order to keep from creating new generations of homeless animals. It’s an amazing way to help these poor things even if you’re unable to take on adopting them into your life permanently.
