These Unsolved Mysteries Will Have You Scratching Your Head

Most of the world is an absolute mystery. Sure, we know some things–like how to tie our shoes and what our parent’s HBO GO passwords are–but for the most part, we are surrounded by a world that’s full of questions. The answers are typically very few and far between, if you look at the grand scheme of things.

Take these mysteries for example. For years, they have puzzled us, and we still can’t answer these questions with any certainty.

Discovered underneath 35 feet of sand in the banks of the Mures river in 1974, this aluminum wedge was found amongst mastodon bones and appeared to be 300-400 years old. Being that the wedge is made from aluminum, which is thought to be discovered in 1808, many questions have been raised over how it got there and whether it’s a hoax or the remnants of a visit from extra terrestrials.

Erected in 1979, the Georgia Guidestones have been a mystery for decades. Thought of as the “American Stonehenge,” the stone tablets are emblazoned with “The New 10 Commandments.” The commandments are written in multiple languages, but shed no light on who is responsible for the Georgia Guidestones.

The Phaistos Disc was discovered by archaeologist Luigi Pernier in 1908. The fired clay disc was found in the Phaistos palace complex on the Greek island Crete. The disc dates back to the 2nd millenium BC and is covered with mysterious symbols and that remain indecipherable to this day.

Despite being one of the most famous killers who ever lived, we know so little about Jack the Ripper. The first of many murders was committed by Jack the Ripper in 1888. Today, it is believed the ripper may have been Polish immigrant Aaron Kosminski, but there is no certainty.

This manuscript, which is named after the person who purchased it in 1912, dates back to the 1400s and features both a mysterious language and pictures of a plant no botanist has been able to identify.

The Kryptos is a sculpture by Jim Sanborn that stands outside of CIA Headquarters. The sculpture features four encrypted messages, but only three of them have been decoded since its dedication in 1990.

For centuries, we humans have been searching for the Lost City of Atlantis, which is said to be home to the god Neptune and beautiful mermaids. While no physical proof of the city has ever been found, people still have hope it exists thanks to Plato’s many in-depth descriptions of the place in his works.

Both Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin have tried and failed to crack this coded message that was left on a sculpted recreation of Nicolas Poussin’s “Arcadian Shepherds” and is rumored to contain the whereabouts of the Holy Grail.

The Bermuda Triangle is an area of ocean between Puerto Rico, Miami, and Bermuda. Many aircrafts have crashed in the Bermuda Triangle and some, because of the complete lack of wreckage, are even thought to have vanished.

In 1977, an Ohio State University radio telescope detected an unusual pulse of radiation from the area around the Sagittarius constellation. The 37-second signal remains a mystery to this day, as only a massive astronomical event or highly intelligent aliens would have been able to transmit such a signal.
