We all know what kids on the naughty list get from Santa for Christmas…a heaping pile of coal. This year, tell your friends they could have behaved better by gifting them a batch of this super realistic candy coal. It’s guaranteed to get a laugh and be the hit tasty treat of the party. Check out our abridged version of the recipe below, and head to Sprinkle Bakes for a more detailed step-by-step.
Here’s how the coal will look when it’s finished. Totally realistic, right?
Start by whisking together 1 cup of powdered sugar, 1 egg white, a teaspoon and a half of black food coloring gel, and 1/2 a teaspoon of lemon juice. Then, whisk in another 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. The mixture should be thick and powdery. If the mixture is liquidy, add in more powdered sugar.
Next, combine 3 cups of granulated sugar and a 1/4 cup of water in a saucepan. Cook until it’s the texture of wet sand and about 250 degrees in temperature. Then, mix in the powdered sugar mixture. When it’s fully mixed, pour it into a heat-proof pan lined with parchment paper.
After the mixture has hardened, use a chisel and hammer to break up the candy coal.
Present the candy in burlap bags with a “naughty” tag.
This recipe is so funny, I’ll definitely be making a batch for my friends. Love this idea? Share it with a particularly naughty acquaintance.
