Creepy Christmas, Day 20: On Christmas Eve, Finland Makes Their Graveyards Scarily Beautiful.

Welcome to our first annual ViralNova Presents: 25 Days Of Creepy Christmas special section! Every day, from December 1st to December 25th, we’re posting a new Christmas-themed article guaranteed to get you in the creepy holiday spirit.

The graveyard may seem like the perfect place to celebrate Halloween, but actually it’s the setting for one of the most beautiful Finnish Christmas traditions. Christmas is all about family, but the Finnish feel that deceased family members should also be included in the holiday festivities.

On Christmas Eve, the families go out to cemeteries to place candles and lanterns around the graves of their relatives, making these beds for the dead glitter with life. The result is quite breathtaking.

The Finnish people spend part of their Christmas Eve placing candles around the graves of their loved ones.

The entrance is already beautiful.

Some cemeteries use lanterns to protect the candles from the wind.

Every cemetery has an area like this meant to honor relatives’ graves who can’t easily be visited.

Graveyards in bigger towns are so crowded, the light from the candles makes it look like a Christmas party.

An alter for people who don’t necessarily know someone is buried in here, but want to contribute.

The many blankets of snow only contribute to the graveyard’s beauty.

With all the candles, somehow the graveyard becomes the most decorated place on Christmas Eve.

I think the Finns might be onto something here. This is much more beautiful than creepy. In fact it’s actually not creepy at all. Maybe we should start honoring our dead relatives on Christmas like this.
