Building a bicycle is truly an art form. They’re complicated machines with cogs, chains, and parts unrecognizable to the untrained eye. One bicycle enthusiast and designer decided to use his know-how and turn his love for bikes into the coolest clock ever. He attached numbers to a bike chain and a rotating motor that moves in perfect correspondence with the time of day. Not only is it mechanically amazing, but it’s also a unique piece of home decor. Here’s the finished product, using a synchronous motor, wood, an upcycled bicycle chain, and a rear bike cassette. Let’s take a look at how he made it.

First, he cut the frame out of a piece of oak.

He cut a deep ridge for the motor to sit in.

Four pieces of cut oak are stacked on top of each other to make the frame. He added a cover with bronze bearings for the motor.

Before attaching the cassette to the motor, he used a bearing bar to center the shaft.
