All Those Creepy Sounds In Horror Movies Is Made By The Same Instrument

The waterphone (also known as the ocean harp) is a bizarre percussive instrument invented by American artist Richard Waters. Essentially, it’s a stainless steel bowl filled with water that has a series of brass rods attached to the rim of varying length. When struck, those rods resonate strange and ethereal sounds. So, it would make sense that this instrument is primarily used to score horror movies.

Watch as the video below demonstrate some of the sounds the waterphone produces that you may recognize from your nightmares.

Now when you watch your favorite scary movies, you may recognize the waterphones chime making dark rooms darker and hallways populated with phantoms. Even though you’ll know what it is, trust me, it won’t make things any less creepy.
