Did You Know That Cats Aren’t The Only Animals That Can Purr?

A cat’s purr is part of what defines him as being a cat. It’s cute and it actually has healing powers. Some purrs are as loud as lawn mowers, while others are so quiet you can only hear them if you put your ear up to their tummies. What is a purr, exactly? According to this definition, they’re essentially vibrations of muscles which cause the vocal cords to produce sound.

You might think that house cats are the only ones with this endearing quality, but they’re not! Here are some of their surprising purring partners.

3.) Ring-tailed lemurs

When they’re tame, they’ll purr when stroked. Maybe that’s why they’re also called “cat lemurs.”

4.) Bunnies

The sound is produced from them chattering their teeth.

5.) Raccoons

Who knew so many animals had the ability to do something that we think of as a strictly house cat trait. Sure, we fibbed a little with the wildcats like cougars and lynx, but big cats, like lions, that have the ability to roar, can’t purr. You just can’t have it all, apparently.
