Everyone dreams of visiting mythical sunken cities like Atlantis. You’ve probably pictured buildings and structures submerged in the murky depths, amassing coral and becoming one with the sea.
We already know cities like this exist, but artists were recently inspired by this idea and reflected it in their art. Artists around the world are diligently carving statues, only to drop them deep into the ocean where they will likely never be seen, save for a few lucky individuals.
Christ of the Abyss, a statue of Jesus submerged beneath the Mediterranean.
A tribute to fallen African slaves in Moilinere Bay, Grenada.
“The Silent Evolution” by sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor, placed in the Gulf of Mexico.
“The Fall from Grace” off the coast of Grenada.
El Coleccionista de Sueños” (The Archive of Lost Dreams) below Mexico national marine park.
“Hombre en Llamas” (Man on Fire) below Cancun, Mexico.
The gates to Neptune Memorial Reef, an underwater mausoleum off the coast of Florida.
It’s a shame that you could never go see these statues in person unless you want to spend money on scuba lessons. I guess that, in the end, this is what makes them special.
