What These People Had Done To Their Faces Is Mind-Bendingingly Awesome

When we feature a story on ViralNova about what a person did to their face, we expect you to start cringing almost immediately. Fear not! This isn’t one of those posts. If anything, this is less about an effect created on a human face and more about the incredible and creative things technology can do.

The technology seen in the video below is called projection mapping, or video mapping. It’s used to turn everyday objects (usually irregularly shaped ones) into projection surfaces. The surface’s shape is spatially mapped, and then the projections interact with that shape to create some seriously psychedelic effects. This combines projection mapping with face tracking, and was created and directed by a team called Omote, headed by Nobumichi Asai.

The white dots on the men’s faces are to help map the shape of their faces. A replica of their own face is projected, with special effects added in to create all kinds of illusions.

Projection mapping is most commonly seen on buildings, where it’s just as breathtaking. Artists, advertisers, and guerrilla street artists alike have used the technology to engage with the masses on a huge scale. Seen on a human face, though, is extra mind-bending, and opens up all kinds of possibilities.
