Countless people in this country are a bit lazy when it comes to preparing food. These people often rely on purchasing processed items that are super easy to eat. The cost of that convenience is consuming low quality products that are potentially unhealthy. After all, “Mountain Dew Cheetos” are a thing that actually exists.
Mass produced and processed food items are full of preservatives and other chemicals, which wreak havoc on our bodies. They might not hurt us today or tomorrow, but a few decades of eating these gross ingredients could take its toll…
Each of these extremely common foodstuffs contain ingredients that are downright disturbing.
1. Phosphoric acid, which is found in soda, is also used in “acid baths” to remove rust from metal materials. Yummy.
2. Polydimethylsiloxane is an ingredient found in a lot of fast food items. However, it’s also a common component of silly puddy and breast implants.
3. Xanthan gum, used as a thickening agent for salad dressings (as well as many other sauces) is made out of a bacteria similar to the one produced when vegetables rot.
4. High-fructose corn syrup is basically in everything that tastes good and is easy to buy. This includes ice cream, fast food, cereal, juices, bread, candy, condiments, and more. It is used as a replacement for sugar, but researchers are learning that it’s actually much worse to ingest corn syrup than it is sugar.
5. Carmine (or cochineal) is what’s used to dye yogurt and fruit drinks red. The gross part is that it’s mostly made out of crushed beetles.
6. Carrageenan is a common ingredient found in beer that is actually extracted from seaweed. It’s also used in some sexual lubricants because it prevents the transmission of STDs.
7. Sorbitol is a healthy sugar alcohol found in gum and toothpaste, but it can act as a laxative if you ingest too much of it.
8. Gelatin, which is found in products like Jell-O and gummy bears, is comprised mostly of goat bones. Yuck.
These ingredients may not be poison, but they’re still pretty gross. Humans were meant to eat meat and vegetables, not high fructose corn syrup. You’re not going to die instantly if you take a nibble of Jell-O, but it’s a good idea to be more conscious of what we’re putting into our bodies.
