Welcome to our first annual ViralNova Presents: 25 Days Of Creepy Christmas special section! Every day, from December 1st to December 25th, we’re posting a new Christmas-themed article guaranteed to get you in the creepy holiday spirit.
There is a “Christmas village” in central Zhejiang province of the People’s Republic of China. This village is where 60 percent of the world’s holiday decorations are made. With over 600 factories producing Christmas cheer, it’s more than likely at least one of your ropes of tinsel or Santa hats came from here. This Christmas incubator isn’t exactly the Santa’s workshop you always imagined.
This is Wei. He and his father work at taking polystyrene snowflakes and putting them in a powder-coating machine until they turn red. The powder apparently gets everywhere.
Although they work for the biggest producer of Christmas decorations, many workers don’t really know what Christmas is. Wei suspects it’s “like Chinese New Years for foreigners.”
Wei says he wears a Santa hat, not so much to be festive, but to keep the red out of his hair.
Unlike real snowflakes, each one of these snowflakes is exactly the same.
The “elves” that work in the Yiwu “Christmas village” are mainly migrant workers who work 12 hours a day and are paid $312 per month.
After packaging, the items are taken to the Yiuw International Trade Market. The UN has designated the market to be one of the largest wholesale markets in the world.
At the market, there are halls and halls of extremely specific Christmas goodies. This includes a whole row of Santa hats.
I’ve never seen this in any yards before, but I have to assume it’s Christmas decor.
This is what a real war on Christmas would look like.
At least the kids are excited to see Santa.
Boxing the decorations to be shipped from the wholesale market.

Seeing all those Christmas decorations made like that kind of sucks the joy out of the holiday. Those don’t look like the best sort of conditions to work in.
